Each character in World of Warcraft can pick up two primary and all secondary professions. There are a total of eleven different primary professions - 8 crafting and 3 gathering professions, and mining is one of the latter. With mining you are able to extract ores from various mining nods across the WoW. With those ores you will sometimes gain different stones, gems or elements. Extracted ore can be then either prospected into gems by jewlcrafters or smelted into metal bars by miners. Bars are used by engineers and blacksmiths. Whereas raw ore is used by jewlcrafters, other items you acquire with mining such as stones and gems are mainly used for jewlcrafting (but can be used in other professions) and elements are needed for all professions. This is why the mining profession is a very good source of revenue especially in early stages of new expansions.
Like all professions mining does give you a passive bonus to your character. Mining provides you with the passive skill “Toughness” that will at maximum skill provide you with a 120 Stamina boost, making it a perfect profession for all tanking classes.
Leveling mining is not a difficult task even though it might seem a bit boring if you are already level 85 but it’s perfect for when you level up a new character as it does provide you with experience each time you mine a nod thus additionally speeding up your leveling process.
