WoW Mage Leveling Guide - Cataclysm Leveling & Spec

With the newly released expansion to the world of warcraft game, all classes have suffered many changes in their spells and talent trees. Mages have always been a very popular class to play and there is hardly any player that at some point did not start leveling a mage. Mages have three talent trees, all viable and suitable for a certain type of content. Question that imposes itself when you create a mage is which spec is best for leveling?

Mages can choose between the arcane, fire and frost talent trees. All of them are viable for leveling as all three of them are dps specs but they still differ a lot. Arcane is now behind on fire and frost regarding the damage output and is also very mana hungry so we can exclude that build right now. The choice comes down to the Fire and Frost builds.

Fire vs. Frost
Fire is at the moment ‘the’ build for mages. 99% of the mages in PvE content go as fire mage for raiding or dungeons. Seeing how high the damage output of a fire mage is, you can conclude that the fire build is great for leveling since you can kill many creatures in a little period of time. There’s one downside to all of this though since the fire build is not really mana preservative, so you’ll have a lot of downtime. Your fire leveling build should be something like this:

Beside the fact that fire is mana hungry it is also very hard to AoE grind monsters as fire, and it also lacks some defensive cool downs  that frost has to offer.

Frost is not as high on damage as fire is but seeing how it is still viable for PvE content (raids and dungeons) it still makes enough damage to level with it. Frost is not nearly as mana intensive as arcane or fire and thus reduces your down time and increases your leveling speed. What Frost spec has always been famous for is very easy AoE farming of monsters with frost nova and blizzard. This way you can easily kill large number of monsters very fast and significantly further increase your leveling speed. Furthermore, frost spec will provide you with great deal of defensive cooldowns and a pet that will further increase your damage output. You are able to constantly snare and root your enemies making it very hard for them to reach you, let alone kill you. Your frost spec should look something like this:

Frost mages are also great in PvP; in fact, it is the best possible spec for mages in PvP. This way you will level fast, easily kill enemy players without having to constantly worry about mana.

To summarize, frost clearly takes the cake for best leveling spec over fire and arcane. Good idea would be to have a dual talent specialization so you are able to switch to fire when you go into random dungeons. If you are not feeling comfortable leveling your mage as frost for some reason, then give fire spec a go.
